Cheap Alternative Snow Sleds

As the south gets pummeled by the second snow storm of the season (and one of the worst ever), many folks are wishing they had a snow sled. But, what good would that sled do the other 10 years? Chances are after it sat in your garage unused for 3 or 4 you'd throw it by the side of the road or give it away. So how about some cheap alternatives sleds, made from items you might already have around your house.
What other items have you used (or seen used) for sleds?
- Cardboard box - we did this at least once as a kid. It works, granted it won't hold together for too many attempts but it's light and it works.
- Kiddie pool - you probably have to dig it out from under the snow, but chances are good there is one in your backyard. So dig it out and climb in. The great thing about this option is that you can probably even fit a couple of people in it at once.
- Lids to large plastic storage containers - those 5+ gallon storage containers that you buy for around $5 at the hardware store. Grab the lid and head for the hill.
- Vinyl outdoor cushions - the same material that makes these hold up so well on your outdoor furniture will keep them from soaking through.
- A tarp - you might want to cut it down to a smaller size since these are usually pretty big.
- Innertube - you are used to using it in the summer, but now they are all weather.
- Scoop Shovel - although the likelihood of you having one of these if you don't live someplace that snow regularly hits is low.
- Laundry basket - who doesn't have a laundry basket or tub?
- Trash bags -climb in, climb on, push off.
- Cookie sheet -metal, sylicone, glass... pick one

Love the Money Maker Trips

So today I made it to CVS, realized that I was missing some of the coupons I needed (and they didn't have enough Maalox AND the Maalox was more expensive than online). So I ran back home then back out to another CVS, where I bought...
1 Airwick Freshmatic Ultra @ $6
2 Freshmatic refills @$5
1 Freshmatic Compact @$5
2 Maalox liquid @ $6.49 each
1 Maalox 90ct chewables @ $7.89
used the following coupons
$4/20 CVS coupon
BOGO Freshmatic refill
$4/1 Freshmatic Starter Kit
$3/1 Freshmatic Compact Starter Kit
(3)$5/1 Maalox
$10 ECB (from last week's Excedrin deal)
Paid $2.90 OOP (less than the tax)
Got back $20 in ECBs
(It wasn't quite as big a money maker as I hoped it would be, since the Maalox prices were higher than online) but with the $4/20 it still worked out well. If the prices had been the same I would have had to come up with some filler items or do two transactions to reduce the OOP.

It's a Swagbucks Monster!

And I've created it!
I shared last week about how I'd convinced my husband to give Swagbucks a try. Well, now he's hooked. The other night he was online looking for more ways to earn SBs. I even managed to learn something from him. I was under the misguided (evidently) impression that you could only earn Swagbucks for searches twice a day, I was wrong! I have no idea what the limit is, but Paul has been earning for searching three times a day for the past several days. He's just racking up the points. I think we'll be paying for Christmas with Swagbucks this year!
So what about you? Are you Swagging yet? Get to it! You can 30 swagbucks just for signing up to get you started, and Paul has shown me that you can easily earn 30 Swagbucks a day (as opposed to the 20/day I was shooting for) just doing things you'd normally do - like searching the internet. It only takes 450 swagbucks to snag a $5 Amazon card. Those add up quick. So get to it and sign up.

Look what I just got in the mail.... yup, my $10 Gift Card for Home Depot from Ebates. Well, ok.. it's going in Paul's wallet, but I earned it!
You can get one too, just go to Ebates and sign up and after your first purchase through Ebates (which gives you a % of your purchase back), you'll get a $10 gift card of your choice (to Home Depot, Target, Barnes & Noble, Overstock.com or Ebates) - which begs the question of why I decided to get a Home Depot card....

This Week's Totals
Posted by

5:19 PM
So evidently I'm not going to be shopping one week out of this month (or going to be doing a lot less for the next 3), since I spent 2 weeks worth of money out of my grocery envelope this past week. It was evidently my first trip to Publix (early this past week) that did me in; that and the trip to CostCo (which alone was almost a full week's grocery money).
So here are the trips we did this past week:
I did manage to stay within my plan to keep my total OOP at the drugstores at under $5 total. I'm hoping to continue that this week.
It's scary to think that that's half my cash for the month, so I guess I really have to tighten my spending belt for the rest of the month.
So here are the trips we did this past week:
- CostCo - $32 (ish - I sent hubby and I never actually got the receipt from him)
- Publix - $43.90
- Rite Aid - $1.68 OOP (used $11 in +UPs, got back $2+UPs)
- CVS - $3.60 OOP (used $6.50ECB, got back $10ECB)
- Kroger - $13.11 (also got a Catalina for $1 off next purchase)
- Publix - $12.66

2 Good Shopping Trips Today

5:07 PM
I wish all my shopping trips went as well as my two today (despite fighting the crowds of bread and milk "OMG it's gonna snow" shoppers). I think the fact that the stores were so busy helped me stick to my plan that much more. First I hit Kroger....
- used (5) .50/1 Old El Paso product (doubled to $1)
- used $2/2 Athenos
Total after tax: $13.11
From there I headed to Publix (which wasn't nearly as busy for some reason), and bought....

- used B1 Old Spice antiperspirant G1 body wash
- used (2) $2/1 Swiss Miss
- used (2) $1.25/1 Yoplait Smoothie
Total: $12.65 after tax
These were both pretty small trips and hopefully I can keep them small for the most part now that we have a decent stockpile of most (non-perishable) items that we use regularly. The best thing about both of these trips is the items I got totally FREE at each store. I almost forgot about the Swiss Miss until I was in line. I had to go back for those (they weren't even on sale but just the fact that they were free after the coupons made it worth getting out of line).
- 2 Carnation Instant Breakfast @ 4.99 each = 9.98
- 3 Old El Paso Refried Beans @ 3/$4 = $4
- 2 Old El Paso Taco Seasoning @ $1.09 each = 2.18
- 2 Athenos Hummus @ .98 each = 1.96
- Flatbread = $2.50
- used (5) .50/1 Old El Paso product (doubled to $1)
- used $2/2 Athenos
Total after tax: $13.11
From there I headed to Publix (which wasn't nearly as busy for some reason), and bought....

- 2 Old Spice antiperspirants @ 2/$6
- Old Spice body wash @ $3
- 2 Yoplait Smoothies @ $3.19 BOGO
- 2 Swiss Miss hot chocolate @ $1.99 = $3.98
- 2 Publix Yogurt @ $1.89 = $3.78
- 1 Deli Yo-Yo Cookie @ $1.99 (couldn't resist)
- used B1 Old Spice antiperspirant G1 body wash
- used (2) $2/1 Swiss Miss
- used (2) $1.25/1 Yoplait Smoothie
Total: $12.65 after tax
